Today´s legal and economic challenges require a careful approach to the fields of law, economics, and the regulatory framework of operation for our social and economic model. This broad field of study is characterized by increasingly complex and specialized knowledge, and research focused on developing the academic, intellectual, and technical skills required to master the areas pertaining to Law and Economics, and follows a specific set of training activities which have been tailored to the program´s particular areas of interest.
The PhD in Law and Economics unfolds alongside a variety of Areas of Research focused on issues and aspects of particular concern and significance to 21st Century societies and markets. Trainee researchers will perform research work in one of these fields of study, with the goal of developing the skills, abilities, and technical and scientific production knowledge required to successfully complete and defend a Doctoral Dissertation.

The Doctorate Program in Law and Economics is intended for students with a background in legal sciences, economics, finance and accounting, international relations and other social sciences with a particular interest in the interaction between law and economics, along with a capacity for reflection and critical analysis. It is recommended that students possess an adequate knowledge of languages, especially English, for the study of specialized international resources.
Typically, admission to the official doctorate program in Law and Economics requires both official Bachelor’s and University Master’s degrees (an official Master’s degree in the disciplines of Law, Economics, Business or Finance is specifically required).
The program´s Academic Committee, chaired by the Program Coordinator, determines whether the candidate meets the general academic requirements for admission.
This criteria are similar for both full-time and part-time students.
Applications for admission will be evaluated by the Academic Committee according to the following student admissions and selection criteria:
1- Academic transcripts, including all prior completed coursework (grade point average), represent 80% of the overall evaluation and are weighed as follows:
· Bachelor Degree Academic transcripts: up to 60%
· Master’s Degree Academic transcripts: up to 20%
2- Résumé, representing 10% of the overall score. The following will be considered:
· The type of knowledge acquired by the candidate during prior training.
· Published materials in scientific journals.
· English level as certified through an officially recognized exam. At a minimum the student must possess a B2 level, according to the Common European Reference Framework for Languages.
3- Letters of recommendation (up to 2), which will represent 10% of the overall score: a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or professional in the candidate´s field of study.
After reviewing the submitted documentation, the Academic Committee may call the applicant for a personal interview with one of its members in order to obtain further information and discuss the merits provided for admission to the PhD program.
Admission procedures for students with special educational needs due to disability.
In the case of students with special educational needs due to disability, the Academic Committee of each program will issue a pre-admission report evaluating the possibility of a modified curriculum, courses and/or alternative studies in accordance to the principles of equal opportunity, without prejudice to the competencies of the universities´ Equal Opportunity programs.
