Welcome to the Humanities in the Contemporary World PhD Program
The main purpose of the Humanities in the Contemporary World doctoral program is to develop a network of internationally specialized researchers in the different areas of study and research in the Humanities, and to continue and expand the Lines of Research being conducted in Humanities departments and other related areas of knowledge, at the three CEU Universities (San Pablo, Madrid; Cardenal Herrera, Valencia; and Abat Oliba, Barcelona). The three universities will implement the program jointly.
The Program revolves around three main axes:
- Culture as the foundation of community in history.
- The dissemination of culture in history.
- Culture as heritage and legacy.
The aim is to ensure that the three axes promote specialization in all humanistic knowledge (History, Literature, Art, Philosophy, Pedagogy, etc.).
Graduate profile
Doctoral training is mainly aimed at incorporating those enrolled in the program into the academic research career, but it is not the only facet of the profile of the graduate of the Doctoral Program in Humanities for the Contemporary World. A good part of those enrolled in the program respond to this specific interest in consolidating their status at the university with a view to joining an academic faculty after obtaining the title as doctoral professors. However, a high percentage of our researchers come from the professional world and are at a mature age in which they have, or are close to finishing their active practice, but they have always felt humanistic concerns and, therefore, in a constant desire for knowledge. – a driving element of a large part of our FIs – choose to pursue a Doctorate Program in Humanities for the Contemporary World as the culmination of a full professional life. Another group of researchers, younger, also has professional aspirations with companies, private institutions, foundations or cooperation organizations and is motivated by an interest in developing their teaching skills by strengthening their research capacity or delving deeper into the theoretical basis of the knowledge acquired. They carry out the program to expand their skills either in executive training tasks in the variable humanistic environment, or with the aim of specializing in postgraduate training, or to join university master's degrees backed by a doctoral degree.
Professional outings
Professional opportunities are related to the profiles of the graduates. Our new Doctors have among their professional priorities the academic, teaching and/or university world in addition to their integration into public or private research centers. We also find the wide range offered by non-profit institutions such as cultural foundations or non-governmental organizations as common destinations for new doctors in addition to medium or large companies that demand a marked humanistic profile. Others choose to take part in contracts and research projects of public or private institutions of a national and international nature. There is also good integration in specific companies in the world of Humanities, thought, cultural management and artistic creation as well as legal-political institutions of the EU and international organizations.
